Midnight Lights (A birthday gift for Smart)

One-Shot
The final applause on the Jiangnan stage had faded around four in the afternoon on September 20th. By the time Smart crossed the airport gates following a smooth flight, the clock barely read ten at night upon stepping into Bangkok, just a couple of hours away from turning 21, the exact day of his birthday. The official plan for the following day was to see his family and attend a dinner with his work team, but that night still held a surprise.
Before boarding, managing to slip in a quick message, he had warned Boom with resignation: "The flight left early, I'm getting into Bangkok around ten at night. I have the 21st completely packed between my family and the work team, and all I want to do is collapse in my bed." Boom had answered him with a simple and enigmatic "Rest on the flight."
The flight passed in calm. Upon landing in Bangkok, just as was customary in the company's logistics, official transportation picked up the team and Smart, dropping him off first at his building before continuing on with the others.
He arrived at his building's lobby well before midnight, wearing his unmistakable resting glasses, face mask, and the hood of his dark sweatshirt to go unnoticed. The security guard stopped him with a small, knowing smile and handed him a sealed kraft paper envelope.
Smart frowned. Opening it under the dim lobby light, he didn't find a digital card, but rather a freehand-drawn map and the first instruction. Without thinking twice, he ran up for a moment to grab his vehicle keys, left his suitcase, and headed down to the parking lot, got into his car, and drove off to follow the map.
The route led him step by step through the city:
Clue 1: A dark, quiet street where they had once taken shelter in hiding from the cameras. There, stuck to a traffic sign, he found a small handwritten note: "If you wanted to escape to rest, you'll have to earn the night. Keep looking."
Clue 2: A local restaurant in Bangkok that served food late at night. Upon arrival, the waiter on duty—an absolute accomplice—handed him a crumpled napkin with silly phrases written in pencil by Boom, along with a small gift: a leather keychain engraved with both of their names.
Clue 3: A 24-hour dessert nook, a refuge they used to escape to when the entire city slept to avoid prying eyes. Waiting for him there was a letter that read exactly: "I know exhaustion weighs on your shoulders and that tomorrow will be a heavy day, but I wanted to remind you that your smile and your kisses are my favorite place in the world. Enjoy this night journey just for you."
Clue 4: A midnight cafe they also frequented. When he leaned over the bar, they handed him the last clue: the address of an old building and a short note that read: "The secret is almost over. Go up to where the sky looks closest."
The final stop led him to an old historical building in the cultural district. A private security guard, with total naturalness, handed him a heavy metal key and pointed him toward an old wrought-iron elevator.
When the elevator gates opened on the top floor, the contrast was absolute. There was no noise of engines, no distant sirens, no pressure of time. The building's wide rooftop had been transformed into a secret refuge suspended over the sea of city lights. An infinite number of fairy lights crossed from one end to the other, simulating a personal constellation.
And there, standing next to a small wooden table illuminated by candles, was Boom. He was wearing a light jacket and an expression halfway between nervous and expectant that melted into a huge smile upon seeing him appear.
—You made it to the end of the journey—Boom said, exhaling a sigh of relief as he walked toward him.
—This is... incredible, Boom—Smart replied, finally taking off his glasses and melting into an embrace that instantly dispelled all the exhaustion he was carrying.—Did you do all this by yourself?
—I wasn't going to let your birthday pass without giving you a moment of peace and love—Boom replied with a soft smile, before leaning in to give him a tender, warm kiss on the lips.
They sat down for dinner; the meal was simple but featured Smart's favorite food, served unpretentiously under the city sky. After dinner, they chatted for a while about how their respective recent events had gone, laughing at work anecdotes and enjoying the silent truce.
Suddenly, Boom looked at him mischievously and asked him to close his eyes. Smart obeyed with a curious smile. Within seconds, Boom turned off the fairy lights and table lights, darkening the space completely, and turned on the old projector pointing straight at the rooftop's white wall.
The improvised screen lit up with a homemade, long, and detailed video made with clips they kept as treasures from their two years together: behind-the-scenes fragments from the series they filmed that no one else has; knowing and disguised glances at public events where they could barely greet each other without betraying their emotions; Smart focused and caught playing video games in the living room; Smart doing a funny and flirty dance for Boom while opening a bottle of wine; everyday moments at home like Smart absentmindedly washing the dishes; Smart fast asleep in the bed with his mouth slightly open; short clips of him snoring softly while they tried to watch a series and fatigue won the battle; and many photos of the two of them together holding hands, kissing, having dinner, traveling, etc.
Smart remained in absolute silence, his chest full of overflowing emotion, seeing his true daily life, his refuge, and his story reflected in Boom's eyes.
When the video ended and the dim lights came back on, Boom sat next to him, handed him a small, simply wrapped box, and smiled mischievously.
—Happy birthday, Smart. Open it.
Smart untied the cord and opened the box. Inside was an incredible set: a subtle ring, a minimalist bracelet, and a delicate necklace, all engraved with small secret details only they understood. Smart smiled, deeply moved, let Boom put the pieces on him calmly, and kissed him with infinite devotion.
Later on, in the intimate twilight of that refuge and with the certainty that the world kept spinning down below, they surrendered to each other calmly, making love and sealing their bond in the most intimate way possible.
With calm settled in their chests, sitting on the edge of the perimeter wall with a warm cup of coffee between their hands, the silhouette of Bangkok began to be tinged with the first rays of dawn. Smart rested his head on Boom's shoulder, closing his eyes for an instant.
—Thank you—Smart whispered in a soft voice.—It's been the best birthday in years.
Smart knew that no exhaustion and no commitment could ever extinguish the magic of that instant or of being with the person he loved and yearned for most at the end of every storm: Boom. Outside, the city was beginning to fully awaken, but for them, time remained suspended exactly where it was supposed to be.
